Despite the best efforts of both the Republic of Aquitaine Navy (RAN) and the Freiburg Empire, pirates remain a problem for smaller communities, away from the main starlanes.Due to Jessica Keller's success on her previous mission to cause problems for the Freiburg Empire, the head of the senate requests Jessica's assistance on a very special assignment pirate hunting. What sort of mischief can Jessica and her crew cause in a backwater system? Particularly when given the full backing of the senate?"Queen of the Pirates"—the second novel in The Chronicles of Jessica Keller—mixes interstellar politics with heart-racing grand space battles. Be sure to read both the first book about Jessica, "Auberon" as well as the continuing adventures in, "Last of the Immortals" and "Goddess of War".
Queen of the Pirates The Jessica Keller Chronicles Blaze Ward Books
This book is the 2nd adventure of Jessica Keller and there's a lot to like - at least for me. Many of the positives of the first adventure are back in the second and it's a lot of fun in many places. I would call this tale for more thoughtful and developed as Jessica in this book suffers some crushing losses. Other things to like is there is quite a bit more background information given about how this war developed and what the adversaries are fighting over.Perhaps the best way to contrast the two books is that the first book reminded me a lot of movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark #1 - rollicking good fun and the good guys end up kicking butt and taking names. You can watch (or read books like these movies) time and time again and they're just good fun. A nice couple of hours of distraction and high adventure that are just fun, even though you know exactly what's coming.
Book #2 here is far more like The Empire Strikes Back in which the good guys take a significant loss and don't really come out of the adventure with their hides (physically or mentally) intact. I wouldn't call this book a dark tale, but it's certainly not like the more lighthearted first book. Now - all that said, this book is a good read and you do indeed suffer right alongside Jessica. The writing is good and I've liked these two books as a story and am look forwarded to the next book.

Queen of the Pirates The Jessica Keller Chronicles Blaze Ward Books Reviews
I have enjoyed all the books by Blaze Ward that I have read.
Another great story in the Jessica Keller Chronicles, great second book I couldn't put it down, can't wait to start the next one.
Clearly derivative from Weber's "Honor Harrington" series it is a fast paced space opera. Pleasent read with well written action. In this one Jessica is sent to an out lying system to deal with a pirate problem. Has some large holes in the plot but largely works well. The romance is not believable and superficial.
Excellent second installment in the series. Jessica blooms into evermore of a warrior and a woman finding her center with toughness and vulnerability. She is finally able to use her sword skills as more than meditation. And Moirrey is one of the best characters I have ever encountered; very well played. Off to the third in the series.
Where the first of this series introduced Jessica Keller as an up and coming commander in the Republic of Aquitaine space force thru a series of space battles, this effort is of much wider scope. As the book opens Jessica is enjoying home leave after wrecking havoc in her last assignment. So much so that the first space lord, who is her mentor, and a high political figure are preparing her for much bigger things. As part of her grooming they send her to a remote corner of the empire where she can practice her diplomacy(serious weak point, this girl specializes in kicking a**)while combating a upswing in piracy that may be a cover for deeper moves. Plenty of land based action mixes well with space shoot 'em ups. Keller and secondary characters are further developed and turn multidimensional adding depth as the series matures into a serious contender for the title of grand space opera.
The lead character is a fascinating person that will slowly get to know more and more about. The crew is made up of the best minds with a quirky habit/skill of mischief.
This book has a great combination of stellar ship warfare, political intrigue, and innovative engineering. Would love to hear more about ship life itself and more descriptions of the ships-for example length, weight, and armament.
I have read well over 1200 science fiction books in my life. It is so great to see new ones come out that I really enjoy.Blaze Ward has been a new discovery for me of late and now I get to enjoy reading everything I can get of his.
I'd like a little more complexity on the characters but if you liked the first one then just keep reading! Some good sci-fi with space ship battles and some fleet action. I just with I found the Pixie more entertaining than I do. Oh and male characters don't generally think about how a woman has just shown how women are superior to men and it was wrong to think otherwise, especially in a combat setting, or however it was actually phrased. I mean its the sort of joke that's good when its from one sex to the other but yeah doesn't really fly. It'd be like having a female character thinking about how men are just dang superior to women on x, y or z. Even if true, which most would debate, got to have either the home town pride or an eye roll and move on.
